Seriously, why are men in solidarity with Andrew Tate?

Andrew Tate, the infamous British-American social media person, has made the news again after numerous men marched on Athena, Greece’s streets to free Tate from Romanian custody.

Andrew Tate first gained popularity in 2022 when his sexist videos went viral. Tate, a former kickboxer, had somehow become the talk of the town. To everyone's dismay, this overnight fame was because of misogynist videos that he made to influence young boys and ‘save them’ from the evil called feminism.

In an interview that led to his downfall, Tate mentions how he is ‘absolutely a misogynist.’ He went on to say:

“I’m a realist and when you’re a realist you’re sexist. There’s no way you can be rooted in reality and not be sexist.”

What’s baffling is the amount of love Tate received over this statement. Unfortunately, the aforementioned isn’t the only thing Tate has said. In several clips, he casually mentions how rape victims/ survivors need to bear responsibility for what happened to them.

Moreover, this radicalising misogynist’s videos on TikTok have over 11 billion views. It’s unfortunate how this self-proclaimed misogynist has come to influence young boys into adapting to this realist personality.

The best new year’s gift the world could get was Andrew Tate’s detainment by Romanian police. Tate’s arrest was hilarious- in an attempt to make a video attacking environmental activist Greta Thunberg, Tate accidentally revealed his location when he was eating a pizza sold by a local Romanian restaurant. Tate was detained over rape and human trafficking cases.

Now, what’s even scarier is the fact that several young men are protesting for Tate’s release in the Greek capital. Firstly, what is wrong with these men for they are indirectly supporting Andrew Tate who is under custody for rape and human trafficking?

The idea that young men support Tate despite knowing about his crimes explains how we’ve fallen globally. Surely, you could see something as preposterous as Andrew Tate in the early days of existence, but to see this in 2023 is an indication that we as a society have failed.

Time and again, we have seen people like Tate come and go, but it’s surprising to see how many people follow and learn from this absolute monstrosity of a person.

Young adults generally have a polarised view of the world- for them, it’s either black or white; and when someone like Tate comes and tells them that it’s a man’s world and that women are beneath them, these young men believe him and worship whatever’s left off this person’s brain.

But, what exactly is masculinity? Is it derogating women and telling them that it’s a man’s world? Or is it being someone that respects every gender?

While this idea of alpha male doesn’t originate from Tate, and is, unfortunately, a product of patriarchy- he surely promotes this concept over subjective experiences.

But, the concept of unlearning is in our hands. How long are we going to blame patriarchy for their behaviour when people have the resources and privilege to unlearn this toxic masculinity?

Finally, the question that looms is- who is at fault?

Is it his parents for not instilling decency in him? Or an ex-girlfriend who broke his heart and directed him toward being an enraged alpha male? (because, at the end of the day, women are to be blamed).

Who is to blame when these young men act like Tate and believe that they can be violent with women with the safety of their apparent impunity? Who is to blame when these men go on the streets and shame women for being themselves or lock up their girlfriends for talking back at them? Who is to blame? Andrew Tate.
